How to Develop Discernment and KEEP IT in 2023!

Advice on how to develop discernment has been around since the dawn of creation, so don’t go on losing it in 2023.

Solomon after being made king said to the Lord, “But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.” So, asking the Lord, “Give your servant (Solomon) a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” — 1 Kings 3

God, being pleased with Solomon’s selfless request, granted him wealth and honor, both corollaries of wisdom — a wisdom, which in time, would develop in Solomon’s actions. However, the bible has no time from that, hence the famous way he dealt with the two prostitutes in the very next chapter

1. Ask and You Shall Receive

Before gaining discernment, in 1 Kings 2, Solomon style of ruling was a bit tyrannical; he slayed those who in the past opposed him as king. He even killed one of them for leaving the borders of his exile to retrieve a slave gone astray. Solomon asking for a discerning heart was one of the wisest things he could do.

2. Refine your SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT after taking care of your SURVIVAL

Both types of discernment are important, however, you must take care of survival first. Survival discernment aligns with the corporeal; it enables us to survive, nourish and protect our bodies. Instincts like these develop naturally as we grow into adulthood, therefore it is easier to discern what to do with them compared to spiritual discernment.

Spiritual discernment is more linked to the spiritual and our higher selves. It is the ability to perceive right from wrong. If you have the wrong discernment, you tend to make choices that lead to death and darkness. Having the right discernment, like Solomon, leads to choices pointing towards salvation and light. Unfortunately, having the right discernment doesn’t mean you are free from relinquishing that ability. The story of Solomon demonstrates this. King Solomon started out with keen discernment but as his story progresses in the book of 1 Kings, we see his perception wavering about what’s right and what’s wrong.

3. Keeping Discernment is a War Against Corruption

King Solomon started out as being the wisest of kings. God granted him the ability to have impeccable wisdom. God also promised that he would make Solomon and his lineage rule over his people forever. He promised this under one condition: obey God’s commands. One command was that Solomon was not to worship other God’s. The rise of his power was ultimately his downfall. It’s interesting that the wives of Solomon influenced him to worship other God’s (1 Kings 11). Solomon was once the wisest king on the planet; however, the discernment God granted him wasn’t set in stone. Prone to outside, corrupting influences (wealth, greed, lust…) the most discerning man made erroneous choices leading to his demise.

Final Thoughts: With Age comes the Need to Discern

Maturity in life comes with added complex decisions we must make. These decisions are often coupled with a test in strength of character and morality. If you have good discernment, then you will be able to tell the difference between the right decision vs. the wrong one. Depending on the one you make, your actions will have its consequences. One road may lead to light, salvation, and spiritual development. Another may lead to death and darkness like Solomon. Throughout the course of life, the fork in the road doesn’t mean that you will be on one path forever. The grace of God grants us rebirth and with that, another opportunity to exercise discernment.

Let’s all get on that path towards the light in 2023!
